Is It Safe to Upload Your PDF to an Online Converter?

Most online PDF converters upload your file. We walk through what that costs you and how to keep your documents private.

Answer: usually no, depends on content

‘Safe’ is a relative word. Uploading sensitive documents to any online service involves three classes of risk:

  1. Storage: is the file deleted immediately? how long is it retained?
  2. Operator access: can the operator read the file? is the file content included in audit logs?
  3. Distribution: does the operator share with third parties (ad networks, AI training partners)?

When upload doesn’t matter

Public documents, marketing material, internal research drafts.

When to switch to browser-side

Tax forms, contracts, medical records, family photos, internal memos — anything with names, addresses, or financial data.

The browser-side path

Every tool on this site processes files in your browser; PDF files don’t upload.

Note

Even a ‘delete after 1 hour’ promise means at least an hour of data exposure. The right answer for sensitive files is to not upload at all.
