Command-line

ffmpeg is the standard tool for pulling audio from MP4, MOV, or WebM. Run:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vn -acodec libmp3lame -q:a 2 output.mp3

Flags explained:

  • -vn drops the video stream
  • -acodec libmp3lame selects the MP3 codec
  • -q:a 2 is high quality (0 best, 9 worst)

GUI tools

  • VLC: Media → Convert / Save
  • HandBrake: video-oriented but can output MP3 / AAC
  • macOS: Preview can’t; use QuickTime export (some formats only)

In-browser

In-browser video-to-audio extraction requires WebCodecs API or a large WASM (FFmpeg.wasm). We don’t currently ship one.

Note

When a video has multiple audio tracks (e.g. multi-language), use -map 0:a:N to select the Nth.
