Tool vs conversion

Audio Extractor inspects metadata (duration, bitrate, sample rate, channels). For actual WAV → MP3 encoding:

  • ffmpeg (desktop, command line)
  • VLC (GUI)

The WAV vs MP3 trade-off

WAV: uncompressed, ~10 MB/minute, CD quality. MP3: lossy compressed, ~1 MB/minute, requires a quality level.

Is it worth converting?

When storage matters more than the audible difference, yes. Otherwise no.

Note

MP3 encoding requires LAME or a similar codec; in-browser implementations are heavy (>100 KB JS) and we don’t ship one at the moment.
